Craft Animfest

CRAFT International Animation Festival (CRAFT Animfest) is the first festival in Asia celebrating traditional techniques in animation (stop motion, classic drawing/painting animation, sand animation, etc.) It is also the first festival in Southeast Asia to review the current artistic animation implemented in this part of the world (in that case including digital techniques).

CRAFT Animfest task is to popularize some classic techniques of animation in a computer-dominated environment. Also to appreciate artists from this the Southeast Asia region. Ones who, regardless of the technique, makes original and interesting films. The moments of CRAFT Animfest is also a time for a creative meeting and exchange of experiences between creators and festival goers.

CRAFT Animfest started as a biennial festival held every odd year since 2017. Starting with its fifth edition in 2025, the festival will be held annually, during the same week as World Animation Day, celebrated on October 28.

History

In 2016, two animation filmmakers from Indonesia; Chonie Prysilia, and Hizkia Subiyantoro met Piotr Kardas (director & founder of a few animation film festivals from Poland) for the first time. They spent the first three hours together discussing the development of animation filmmaking in Indonesia. The discussion highlighted a significant influence of Hollywood Animation and Japanese Anime industry among creators.

Unfortunately the young generation of creators got a very little knowledge on traditional animation techniques. Educational modules taught by vocational high schools and universities are also focusing on 3D and other computer generated animation techniques.

Meanwhile, craftsmanship playing a great role in Indonesia. It is also the core of animation. Therefore skipping the elements of craftsmanship of traditional animation techniques is a big loss on developing the face of a young animation industry.

After three hours conversation, the three future co-founders sees the importance existence of a specific festival.
One that would provide a bigger horizon to creators, by showing them the wide range techniques of animation. This will hopefully trigger creativities and motivation to produce animation that is unique and original.

In 2017, a year after that conversation, CRAFT International Animation Festival was born.
